There are three main principles that serve to guide the expatriate when dealing with local citizens and residents. These principles, when applied to various contexts such as dress, speech, gestures and social relations will increase experiences of acceptance, respect, friendship and success. Relations between individuals in Kuwait and elsewhere can be more harmonious if we take the initiative to learn about the culture. In Kuwait, neither friendship nor business can be rushed. Even when people speak the same language, their cultures still play an important role in what they say and how they say it. In fact, the more differences that exist between two people's cultures, the more difficult it can be for them to communicate effectively. This talk by Fahad Al-Sumait will introduce guests to some basic concepts from the field of intercultural communication, which is an area of research dedicated to better understanding the role played by culture in people's interactions. By developing a greater awareness of culture (our own and others) we can find ways to better connect with one another.
